With up to 11, 000 species of birds in the world, I personally have walked into an old growth forest or listened to them from my backyard and heard bird calls, I wish I could have identified more easily. This is an exciting topic because migratory birds effectively highlight the interconnectedness of our ecosystems. The concept of online identification courses empowering everyday birdwatchers to contribute to citizen science perfectly blends technology with conservation.

While birdwatching can sometimes feel like a solitary activity, sharing sightings and participating in virtual workshops creates a sense of belonging and collective purpose. It makes me wonder, could these online platforms eventually become global hubs where data from thousands of bird enthusiasts is pooled together to give scientists real-time insights into migration patterns?

        Alice,

Thank you for your perspective! I watched migratory birds yesterday and was amazed at how they move in sync with each other, changing formations in the sky gracefully with no verbal communication. Each member of the flock knowing exactly what to do. I saw two flocks of geese in the genus Anser. One flock flew in the characteristic V formation, while the other shifted from a V formation into a horizontal line across the sky. It is always wonderful to see this.

In response to your question, fortunately, there are already groups of people who work as citizen scientists to report valuable data that helps us understand the health of many different bird species. Audubon, Cornell Lab, and Birds Canada has several citizen science activities. One of these is the Backyard Bird Count. These organizations and others encourage individuals and groups to provide important numbers that helps scientists assess the health of various bird populations.
