Ten Conservation Success Stories from Around the World in 2025

As the previous year has come to an end and a new year has begun, I thought it was appropriate to celebrate the successes that have occurred in 2025 in terms of conservation and improvements in stewardship of the beautiful earth that we live on. Conservation success stories from around the world vary in scope and size, however, every little action adds up to make a big impact when combined with other smaller actions. I encourage you to join me as I continue to work on more ways I can help the earth through increased eco-friendly actions.

Conservation Success Stories from Around the World

Here is the List of 10 Notable Eco-Friendly Goals Achieved

Biodegradable Plastics

These new plastics are eco-friendly and can be composted. Additionally, they are not made out of petroleum based products, therefore they break down more quickly and can be composed without placing unhealthy micro particles into the water and soil. These are starting to be mass produced and replace plastic packaging that is currently being commercially used.

Coal Usage is Down in India

There was a reduction in coal usage in India by 50 percent as renewable energy became more accessible and cost effective. There were 30 Gigawatts of power added to their infrastructure that uses renewable sources of energy which can power approximately 18 million homes.

Electric Vehicle Sales Have Increased

Worldwide the statistics tell a promising story of reducing Carbon Dioxide emissions through the use of electric Vehicles or EV’s. Worldwide sales are up 48 percent. USA is behind Europe and China as far as sales in this commodity.

Energy Storage Has Surpassed its Target in the USA

Renewable energy works best when it can be stored and actually requires storage in large batteries for days when there are no renewable energy sources like wind to power the turbines. The goal of 34 Gigawatts of batteries connected to the US power grid by 2025 was surpassed by reaching a grand total of 40 Gigawatts of storage capacity within the final few months of last year.

The Ozone Hole has Decreased in Size

Awareness is always the key, then of course action which then results in change. The restriction of the use of  Hydroflourocarbons and other harmful chemicals has continued to allow this protective part of the Earth’s atmosphere to experience restoration. An exciting update from scientists revealed that this important layer of the atmosphere has the smallest hole in it in 6 years.

China’s Carbon Emissions Have Decreased

According to energy analyst, Lauri Myllyvirta, China is reducing its dependence on coal power through the use of renewable sources of energy like solar and wind for electricity. This is one example of how China is achieving carbon neutrality.

Protection of Thirty Percent of International Waters

There was the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPA’s) that limits activities that would disturb marine life like large fishing vessels and cargo ships. This was established by the High Seas Treaty created in 2023. In 2025, there was the creation of the largest MPA region. This can be an encouraging action that can result in less pollution and marine life getting accidentally caught in fishing nets or struck by boats.

Renewable Energy Sources are Cost Effective in Australia

Reducing the cost of alternative green sources of energy is one of the first steps to making it sought after by consumers. Solar power is half as costly as coal which makes it the a more sought after source of power. Going one step further is Australia that will be able to offer this free as it moved from dependence on coal to solar power in 2025.

Several Endangered Species Have Are Experiencing Population Growth

There were several noted improvements in wildlife populations of endangered and threatened species in 2025. For starters the Green Turtle is off the Endangered Species List, which is wonderful news, Additionally, Peregrine Falcons, American Alligators,  Okapis, Bettongs and several species of rhino are also showing promising improvements and speak to what can be accomplished through conservation efforts,

Conservation Groups are Partnering with Farmers to Provide Migratory Bird Resting Places

These mutually agreed upon joint agreements are benefiting both the farmers and the populations of birds that would not survive without resting places during their long migratory flights to warmer southern locations primarily during the Winter Solstice. These payments subsidize the farmers and in some cases help them to survive financially, while also helping conserve migratory bird populations through the maintenance of vital stop over sites.

A Year in Review 2025

These are just some of the many great things that have been accomplished in 2025 to help the earth and move towards a greener planet. There is more to come in 2026 as the immediate requirement for results increases due to the effects of climate change. I encourage you to continue to think of ways you can work towards a healthier planet in 2026, whether it is volunteering on an ecological preserve, consuming products that are responsibly sourced, or driving an electric vehicle to achieve the goal of reducing carbon emissions.  If you are already doing these actions, as I am, then that is great and I encourage you to do more, as I plan on doing this too. If you have not done something to help the environment, no judgement here, I just encourage you to start including eco-friendly actions like how to promote biodiversity in local communities as part of your New Year’s Resolutions. You will feel better for this.
